GEORGE FOREMAN GRILL

“Do it on the ‘George’! A person from another planet, or a behind-the-times country, might hear this in a home or a small restaurant and wonder what in the world folks were referring to. But in most places in the U.S. people would know immediately that they were referring to the small appliance which has shown up everywhere - the George Foreman Grill. It’s a funny thing that a man who was, in the 70’s, known as a tough and ruthless boxer and two-time heavyweight world champion, should now be the smiling spokesman for this home-and-hearth gadget.

The George Foreman Grill is an electric appliance which has non-stick grill plate, grooved to give those desirable “grill marks” on food and a cover which has the same type of surface. Food is placed on the grill and the cover is closed on top of it, enabling the grilling of food from both sides at once - halving the normal grilling time. The whole appliance is constructed with a “tilt” toward the front and a heat-resistant plastic dish is place under the front end so that fat can drain away from the food. This low-fat feature, along with ease of cleaning, is one of the most touted marketing points for the George.

The George Foreman Grill currently comes in nine versions, from the smallest (one portion) and most basic to the family size and the double dize domed grill envisioned for outdoor use. Prices go from $19.99 to $99.99 and a cook book is included with most models.

Mr. Foreman, in a partnership with Salton, introduced the grill, guaranteed to “take the fat out” in 1995. By 1999 10 million had been sold. Never one to pass up a marketing opportunity (he also sells a CD of his inspirational talks and songs and has a clothing line) he offers packages of food combinations, such as steaks and seafood along with his grill, to satisfy varied tastes in a family.

Reviews of the George Foreman Grill give it high marks for quick cooking, efficient clean up and promotion of a healthy lifestyle. The next thing planned for this handy appliance family is removable grill plates which can be put in the dishwasher.

There appears to be no end to the ingenuity of the former boxer and his partners!
